PTA approved or non-PTA: which should you actually buy?

This is the first question almost every customer asks us at Hafeez Centre, and the honest answer is that it depends on the model and on how you plan to use the phone.

What the two terms mean

A PTA approved phone has its IMEI already registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. You put a SIM in and it works, today and in five years. The tax has already been paid, which is why the sticker price is higher.

A non-PTA phone has not been registered. It works perfectly on Wi-Fi, and it will work with a Pakistani SIM for a short grace period, but after that the network blocks the IMEI and the phone becomes a Wi-Fi-only device until you register it and pay the tax.

The arithmetic that actually matters

Compare the non-PTA price plus the registration tax against the PTA approved price. Not the shelf prices. On some models the two land within a few thousand rupees of each other, and on others the non-PTA route genuinely saves you a lot.

Our PTA tax calculator gives you the estimated tax for a specific model, on both the passport and the CNIC route, so you can do that sum before you commit.

When PTA approved is the right call

  • It is your only phone and you need the SIM working from day one.
  • You do not want to deal with the registration process at all.
  • The gap between the two prices is smaller than the tax.
  • You may want to resell it later. PTA approved phones sell faster and for more.

When non-PTA makes sense

  • You have a passport and are eligible for the traveller route, which is usually the cheaper of the two.
  • The phone is a secondary device, or you mainly use it on Wi-Fi.
  • The tax on that particular model is low relative to the price difference.

Three things people get caught out by

  1. The grace period is not permanent. People buy a non-PTA phone, find the SIM works, and assume all is well. It stops working later.
  2. The tax is per IMEI, not per phone model. A dual-SIM handset has two IMEIs and registration covers the device, so check what you are being quoted.
  3. A seller saying "it will never block" is not a guarantee you can hold them to. If a phone is cheap because it is unregistered, treat the tax as part of the price.

What we do

Every listing on this site says clearly whether the phone is PTA approved, non-PTA or SIM locked. If you are not sure which suits you, send us the model on WhatsApp and we will do the sum with you.
