Buying a used MacBook in Pakistan: a 10-point checklist

A used MacBook is one of the best-value laptops you can buy in Pakistan, especially the Apple Silicon (M1 and later) models, which are fast and very efficient even years after release. But a few hidden problems can turn a good deal into an expensive mistake. Here is the checklist we use on every used MacBook before it goes on sale.

1. Activation Lock and Find My

The previous owner must sign out of their Apple ID and turn off Find My. A Mac with Activation Lock still on can be locked remotely. Check under System Settings > [name] > iCloud, or erase the Mac and see whether it asks for someone else's Apple ID.

2. MDM (company management)

Some used MacBooks were owned by companies and are enrolled in Mobile Device Management. They can show a "Remote Management" screen after reset and may be locked by the company. Avoid these unless the seller can prove they are released.

3. Battery cycle count and condition

Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information > Power. Note the Cycle Count and Condition. "Normal" is good; "Service Recommended" means a battery replacement is due, so factor that into the price.

4. Serial number match

The serial number in About This Mac should match the one printed under the laptop. Enter it at Apple's Check Coverage page to confirm the exact model and year.

5. Display

Open a plain white and then a plain black image full screen. Look for dead pixels, bright spots, lines and peeling anti-reflective coating (a known issue on some older Retina models).

6. Keyboard and trackpad

Type every key in a text document. Butterfly keyboards on 2016 to 2019 models can have sticky or repeating keys. Click the trackpad in all four corners.

7. Ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and speakers

Charge from each USB-C port, connect to Wi-Fi, pair a Bluetooth device and play audio at full volume to listen for crackle.

8. Storage and RAM

RAM and storage cannot be upgraded on Apple Silicon MacBooks. Buy the configuration you need now: 8GB works for everyday use, 16GB is better for heavy multitasking and editing.

9. macOS support

Check that the model still receives current macOS updates. Intel MacBooks are reaching the end of their update life; Apple Silicon models will be supported for longer.

10. Charger and body

Check that the charger is the correct wattage, and look for dents near the hinge and corners, which can hint at a drop.
